SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 9) – Beneath the Open Sky – by Dr. Pramila Salian – Sep21
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 9)\nBeneath the Open Sky by Dr. Pramila Salian\n25th Sep to 02nd Oct 2021\n \nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nDr. Pramila Salian (Phd)\nArtful Beginning.\nDespite never having been formally taught art\, I would regularly win painting competitions during school and college days. I was born in Mangalore in 1953 and was a student of Ladyhill Victoria Girls Highschool and University college\, Mangalore. Later after graduation\, I joined Wilson College\, Mumbai\, where I did research in animal physiology under bombay university and received doctorate in zoology while teaching. Soon after retirement in 2010 I picked up my brush and started painting up a storm. \nI pursued my passion and one of my paintings caught the eye of no less than Sir Adi Jehangir\, the owner of Jehangir Art Gallery\, Mumbai\, in an exhibition at Artists’ Centre. \nThe vibrant youth and the colourful life of people around the multicultural city of south mumbai at one side and the fast and furious suburban life of the pulsating crowd at the other\, fascinated me. My first expression came to life through a watercolor painting named ‘Faces and Phases’ which depicted the ‘paradigm shift’ in the ocean of unknown people in the universe. Also it conveyed that changes are constant\, I painted an abstract form. My passion to express the emotions in the context of absolute non expression of the urban populace manifested in my artwork. \nMy sojourns to America\, Europe and Singapore etc. opened my vision dates. Later in India my visit to the tribal areas of Bastar in Chhattisgarh inspired me to create and draw the kind of figures which were greatly appreciated. The series of paintings titled “Beneath the Open Sky” were exhibited in the first show held in Artists’ Centre\, Mumbai. The second series was on cosmos titled ‘Matrix Demystified’. Eventually I held around ten solo shows at Art Entrance\, Kalaghoda; David Sassoon Library ( titled “Elements” ) in Mumbai\, Chitrakala Parishad in Bangalore; Dubai and London at Nehru Centre. The certificate of merit was awarded in 2018 by Artists’ Centre. \nMy series of “Elements” included ships and boats\, water bodies and were displayed at various galleries like Artland\, Global Art Fair Dubai. \nLast updated: Friday\, December 26\, 2025

His interest in drawing and painting drove him all the way from the coastal village of Thonse to Sir JJ School of Art\, Mumbai\, where he had the opportunity of being trained under pioneers such as Haldankar and Dhopeshwarkar. \nHaving completed his studies\, he returned to his village and settled down to continue his artistic career. This led him to become part of the local community and inspire the young emerging artists. He was actively part of several art movements which has directly and indirectly helped to create an art awareness within these spaces. \nHe has held several exhibitions in India and abroad\, among which Me and My Coast showcased paintings that portrayed the deep-rooted love and tribute to his birthplace. Peter Lewis currently resides and works in the town of Brahmavara in the Udupi district\, where he has set up Chitralaya\, an art gallery for his personal collection of artworks. \nNotable Awards\n1996 Rorich Memorial Award\, 1992 Rajyotsava Award\, 1990 Lalit Kala Awards\, 2000-2004 Chairman of the Karnataka Lalit kala Academy. \nLast updated: Friday\, December 26\, 2025

SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 11) – Oil on Canvas by Wilson Souza – Oct21
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 11)\nOil on Canvas by Wilson Souza\n9th to 16th Oct 2021\n \nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nMost of Wilson Souza’s paintings are figurative. They re-flect on the beauty of femininity\, its versatility; from the woman who toils in the fields\, to the one who attends to her child’s needs. Each of them depicted exuberantly through an array of colours. The subject matter he displays aren’t unusual and are frequent examples taken from his sphere of life. \nSemi-abstract art pieces are often described to border between the real and the unreal world. His subjects too seem dream-like and showcase glimpses of life without emphasising on the details. The faceless women he paints\, allows you to truly immerse yourself in them\,\nsince he represents the diverse roles of femininity. These relatable figures that he brings to life\, through bold strokes of oil colours on large canvases\, best embodies nature and its serenity. \nHis style defines every curve and it often portrays women in motion\, constantly in action\, performing each task with grace. There is an enigmatic flair in them which draws you in and it invites you to uncover its tenderness. \nYou can observe how his paintings are a celebration of womanhood in a world where patriarchy still continues to rule. It sheds a light on those who are often side-\nlined\, the women who belong to the poor\, un-informed\, underprivileged\, simple class of society. \nContent by – Nikita G. SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 12) – Acrylic on Paper by N. S. Pattar - Oct 21
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 12)\nAcrylic on Paper by N. S. Pattar\n16th to 23rd Oct 2021\n\nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nN. S. PATTAR \nBorn in 1971\, Hombal\, Gadag \n1992 – BFA in Painting from Vijaya College of Fine Art\, Gadag\, Dharwad University\n1994 – MFA in Painting from MMK College of Visual Art\, Gulbarga\nAwarded HRD National Scholarship\, Govt. of India in 1995-97\n1996 – Joined Mahalasa School of Art as Lecturer in Painting\nPresently\, Head of the Department in Painting and teaches Creative Painting\, History of Art & Art Appreciation in Mahalasa College of Visual Art\, Mangaluru. \nAbstract is a thought of non-existent and abstraction is an idea of invisible\, physically invincible form calved out of an artists innate psychological state. This perpetual imagery may be achieved by an artist committing to connect himself and his art through a constant effort which is a never ending process itself. \nThis series of work is a result of my internal experience codified with the visual fundamentals such as line\, shape\, form\, texture\, color and spatial delineation metamorphosed as mathematical and geometric composition. Hence\, I begin my work from a base of zero – on an empty canvas and with an empty mind. Then\, travel through an empty space from known to the unknown gathering visual elements and finding possibilities in impossible matters and transform them as my personal language and inner expression. This experience is what my knowledge of universe is\, which I have absorbed becomes my philosophy and my art. \nWhere there is beauty there is music and where there is music there is rhythm. The rhythm\, synonymous with cultural symbolism emotionally attached to the transcendental memory traversed through the Indian philosophy and Adhyatma; on the other\, the life of my art is what I have meditated with my source of inspiration – the dynamic application of vibrant colors in the miniature art. \nLast updated: Friday\, December 26\, 2025

S. Punchithaya\, a popular artist in both Kerala and Karnataka\, is a master of watercolor painting. Living as an agriculturist and a planter\, he is surrounded by nature that inspires his painted landscapes\, waterscapes\, areca gardens\, hills and trees in a style akin to the Impressionists. He is equally good in treating oil paints with bold strokes and thick brush marks which he learnt as a student in Bombay during the 1960s. \nThough born in a remote village away from the Kasaragod town\, his interest in drawing and painting took him to Mysore where he studied art at Chamarajendra Institute of Art & Crafts for a year. By then\, he aspired to live in Bombay and moved to the city. Here he got an opportunity to study under G. S. Dandavatimath\, an eminent Kannadiga art educator and the founder of Nutan Kala Mandir\, an art school in Bombay. Dandavatimath actively welcomed and supported Kannadiga students who migrated from the Mysore State to study art in Bombay. Well-known artists such as A. A. Almelkar and K. K. Hebbar were also students of Dandavatimath. \nAfter five years of education\, Punchithaya returned to his village and pursued his artistic career alongside being a planter. He maintained a close relationship with the artists of both the states – Karnataka and Kerala; and participated in a number of state and national exhibitions and events. Along with G. S. Shenoy and Peter Lewis\, he took active part in the art scene of Coastal Karnataka and Kasaragod; and organised exhibitions\, events and street shows in Bengaluru demanding the need for a government art gallery. He once went on a Kala Yatra from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram\, covering every district headquarters and prominent art schools and engaging art lovers and students in talks and interactive sessions. His effortless and dynamic painting-demonstration skills have been a great inspiration for young art enthusiasts and has accordingly won him many followers. \nLast updated: Friday\, December 26\, 2025

SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 14) – Acrylic on Canvas by Ramesh Rao – S Cube Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 14)\nAcrylic on Canvas by Ramesh Rao\n30th Oct to 6th Nov 2021\n\nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nRAMESH RAO \nFounder President\, Artists’ Forum Udupi & Drishya School of Art\, Udupi \nRecipient of Karnataka Rajyotsava Award\, 2019 \nBeginning from the shows since 1970\, Ramesh Rao’s works are a revelation of those images in the mind which yield to the materials in the hand whether abstract or figurative. From the so called realistic to abstract his works are varied and at times complex that is impossible to do justice while making an analytical presentation of it. Although\, Rao does not believe in concept of sheer realism in art\, he has evolved his own individualistic style in his works where real life motifs are the main source of inspiration. Most of his earlier works are based on real life events. His rural and rustic village representations capture sublime beauty in the simplest form\, making people take time out to experience\, be it “Tangewallah” or “Roadside Vendors”. \nRao’s abstract works can be measured only by those who understand and respond to the language of colours and lines. And a study of choice of colours in his abstract works reveal the importance of his delineation of forms. Colours here does not mean range but depth and intensity. As an abstractionist his works derive significance from their tonal subtleties\, the tension they create in passing from one tone to another. And they emit a silent music which engulfs the viewer and brings peace to searching soul. \nBorn in Udupi and among the family of artists\, Rao is entirely a self-taught painter. A recipient of many awards including Karnataka Rajyotsav Award in 2019\, Rao has been instrumental in founding among other groups\, the Artists’ Forum-Udupi\, a group of artists and art professionals in Karnataka and also Drishya School of Arts in Udupi. He is also running a full pledged public air conditioned gallery viz ‘Gallery Dristi’ in Udupi to cater the needs of many young artists. His works have been auctioned by prestigious houses like Southeby’s and many of his works are found in several public corporate offices and in private collections in India and abroad. \n  \nLast updated: Friday\, December 26\, 2025
