SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 11) – Oil on Canvas by Wilson Souza – Oct21
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 11)\nOil on Canvas by Wilson Souza\n9th to 16th Oct 2021\n \nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nMost of Wilson Souza’s paintings are figurative. They re-flect on the beauty of femininity\, its versatility; from the woman who toils in the fields\, to the one who attends to her child’s needs. Each of them depicted exuberantly through an array of colours. The subject matter he displays aren’t unusual and are frequent examples taken from his sphere of life. \nSemi-abstract art pieces are often described to border between the real and the unreal world. His subjects too seem dream-like and showcase glimpses of life without emphasising on the details. The faceless women he paints\, allows you to truly immerse yourself in them\,\nsince he represents the diverse roles of femininity. These relatable figures that he brings to life\, through bold strokes of oil colours on large canvases\, best embodies nature and its serenity. \nHis style defines every curve and it often portrays women in motion\, constantly in action\, performing each task with grace. There is an enigmatic flair in them which draws you in and it invites you to uncover its tenderness. \nYou can observe how his paintings are a celebration of womanhood in a world where patriarchy still continues to rule. It sheds a light on those who are often side-\nlined\, the women who belong to the poor\, un-informed\, underprivileged\, simple class of society. \nContent by – Nikita G. SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 9) – Beneath the Open Sky – by Dr. Pramila Salian – Sep21
DESCRIPTION:Art Kanara Trust presents\nArt of the Week (Series 9)\nBeneath the Open Sky by Dr. Pramila Salian\n25th Sep to 02nd Oct 2021\n \nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812 \nDr. Pramila Salian (Phd)\nArtful Beginning.\nDespite never having been formally taught art\, I would regularly win painting competitions during school and college days. I was born in Mangalore in 1953 and was a student of Ladyhill Victoria Girls Highschool and University college\, Mangalore. Later after graduation\, I joined Wilson College\, Mumbai\, where I did research in animal physiology under bombay university and received doctorate in zoology while teaching. Soon after retirement in 2010 I picked up my brush and started painting up a storm. \nI pursued my passion and one of my paintings caught the eye of no less than Sir Adi Jehangir\, the owner of Jehangir Art Gallery\, Mumbai\, in an exhibition at Artists’ Centre. \nThe vibrant youth and the colourful life of people around the multicultural city of south mumbai at one side and the fast and furious suburban life of the pulsating crowd at the other\, fascinated me. My first expression came to life through a watercolor painting named ‘Faces and Phases’ which depicted the ‘paradigm shift’ in the ocean of unknown people in the universe. Also it conveyed that changes are constant\, I painted an abstract form. My passion to express the emotions in the context of absolute non expression of the urban populace manifested in my artwork. \nMy sojourns to America\, Europe and Singapore etc. opened my vision dates. Later in India my visit to the tribal areas of Bastar in Chhattisgarh inspired me to create and draw the kind of figures which were greatly appreciated. The series of paintings titled “Beneath the Open Sky” were exhibited in the first show held in Artists’ Centre\, Mumbai. The second series was on cosmos titled ‘Matrix Demystified’. Eventually I held around ten solo shows at Art Entrance\, Kalaghoda; David Sassoon Library ( titled “Elements” ) in Mumbai\, Chitrakala Parishad in Bangalore; Dubai and London at Nehru Centre. The certificate of merit was awarded in 2018 by Artists’ Centre. \nMy series of “Elements” included ships and boats\, water bodies and were displayed at various galleries like Artland\, Global Art Fair Dubai. \nLast updated: Wednesday\, August 11\, 2021

SUMMARY:Art of the Week (Series 7) - Megh Malhar - Oil on Canvas - Madusudan Kumar - Sep21
DESCRIPTION:Art of the Week (Series 7)\nMegh Malhar – Oil on Canvas\nby Madusudan Kumar\nFrom 11th to 18th Sep 2021\n \nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\nPhone: +919480014812\n  \nMy Journey – a confluence – Madhusudan Kumar \n“Dawn takes birth in the womb of darkness\,” wrote Khalil Gibran in his book ‘Prophet’. My journey as an artist\, musician and filmmaker was like a marathon walk on the highway of life\, merging into infinity. The metamorphosis was the forceful\, yet gentle sublime and subtle expressions of aesthetics with universal appeal – manifestations in paintings and music. \nThe seeds of catharsis were planted in me during my student days at St. Aloysius College\, Mangaluru\, by Peter D’souza and L. K. Shevgoor\, an eminent portrait artist – who transported me to the world of great masters like Rembrandt\, whose images emerged from a single source of light out of darkness. \nDuring my primary education at Gandhinagar\, Municipal Primary School\, Urwa – I was encouraged to draw and paint by my teachers\, including my illustrious parents; who were art literates. Sir J. J. School of Art\, Bombay (1967-69) – opened my vista to the world of art and art history for the first time. I felt at home with eminent artists as my faculty of teachers in the morning classes. Though I was exposed to the western academic syllabus and discipline\, I was rooted to the soil and thus with immense diligence and awareness\, I created my own idiom and style. It was a gradual process of unlearning. \nAs an illustrator of Children’s books at ‘Ratnabharati’ (1967- 69) – did usher clarity into my visions- under veterans Ratan Batra and Samar Dasgupta as my guides and mentors (Founders: ‘CAG’ awards and the first ever advertising agency of Bombay – Designers: ‘Mother India’ & ‘Filmindia’ magazines) \nMy sojourns took me to Himachal Pradesh\, Uttarakhand and Bengal\, where I painted portraits of great musicians of India – ancestors of ‘Bharat Sitar Samrat’ Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb. My passion to play the sitar and tabla drowned me in the ocean of music\, which inspired me to paint the musical series – ‘Raagas’ and ‘Raaginis’ – in contemporary yet semi- traditional forms. The five elements of ‘Nature’ manifested in varied hues applied with forceful strokes\, those created mostly by the palette knife. \nThe rusted or muted colors of browns and ochre metamorphosed into bright hues\, after I traversed to Gujarat and Rajasthan. Yet\, ‘Black and whites’ continued as my pals among the vast repertoire of mixed media. I was trained to identify the colors through grey tonal gradations and perspectives; along with the study of reverse techniques in black and white and color by L.K. Shevgoor- alumni -‘CAVA’ Mysore – founded by Pavanje Gopalakrishnayya – himself an alumnus of Sir J.J.School of Art\, Bombay – Charles Gerard as his Dean. \nIn 1966 – my black and white work ‘Jugalbandi’ won ‘Bhulabhai Memorial Prize’ by ‘Bombay Art Society’ (Jury: K. H. Ara and K.K. Hebbar – Organized by Soli Batliwala – Chief Guest: Dr. PV.Cherian\, Governor of Maharashtra ). It was termed as ‘Poetry in Motion’ by the art critic of `Times of India’ (Dnyaneshwar Nadkarni). \nAs a filmmaker\, I made several documentaries\, promotional films\, curtain raiser film and a Hindi feature film – ‘Kadambari’ (1975-Starring: Shabana Azmi\, Vijay Arora – Story: Amrita Pritam – Music: Ustad Vilayat Khan – The film won of five ‘Filmfare’ awards). \nLast updated: Wednesday\, August 11\, 2021

SUMMARY:Pollination Series by Jeevan Salian - Art of the Week (Series 3) - Aug 2021
DESCRIPTION:Pollination Series by Jeevan Salian\nArt of the Week (Series 3)\n16th to 22th Aug 2021\nS Cube Art Gallery\nKodialguthu Center for Art & Culture\,\nG. G. Road\,\nBallalbagh\,\nMangalore\n \nA seed. A germinated seed\, from germination to sapling\, sapling to a tree\, tree to a fruit\, fruit to seed again\, seed to germination. Thus is the cyclical process of the nature. Again\, seed to plant\, plant to flower\, and the connection of one flower with the other flower\, an important recurring process called pollination. For me as visual artist and to my sensitive mind these outwardly simple and biological processes catch my imagination and I take the journey of probing into these hidden processes. Various stages of pollination processes render various shapes and forms\, different formations\, made me to use these elements in visualization and to enhance the aesthetic value of my work. The current series is all about pollination. \nAny concept in order to be used in visual art raises many issues. The visual language I use to express my inner thoughts denote the understanding I had of the concept. \nI believe creation of art is a replica of the truth and art should always speak truth. In the process of visualizing\, as an artist I encounter two processes – of philosophical and the other technical. The former belongs to the mind and other related to the physical elements in a work of art. Philosophical element consists of in interest in the subject\, knowledge\, visual sensibilities and imagination. The physical elements include the usage of time\, space and the other material mediums that finally give shape to a work of art. I believe the combination of all of the above leads to creation of things of aesthetic beauty. \nThe contemporary world has seen technological advances than any other time of human history. The impact of technology on our thoughts and projects has changed the way we live and art is no exception. At times I feel technology is a challenge to the creative process but at the same time it can be harnessed to create a thought provoking art. I have kept both dynamics in mind while\ncreating these paintings and drawings\, based on experiments and the rules of aesthetics. \n– Jeevan Salian\, Artist \nLast updated: Wednesday\, August 11\, 2021
